For policies purchased before 10 August 2016, 3:00am UTC your World Nomads policy is provided through Bupa Global

Yes, pregnancy is covered by the policy while you are travelling although there are restrictions to this cover.

Cover is available after you leave home/start your trip up until the:

  • 26th week of pregnancy when expecting one child; and
  • 18th week of pregnancy if you are expecting more than one child or if the pregnancy is the result of fertility treatment.
What’s covered

There is cover under the policy for any overseas medical expenses incurred and also medical evacuation and repatriation if you suffer an acute serious illness or acute serious injury related to or complicated by your pregnancy that requires necessary medical treatment when:

  • the pregnancy has been normal and without complications
  • you have not been previously hospitalised or received treatment or symptoms began before the start of the insurance (or before you extend your insurance)

There is also cover (if no waiting period applies) for unused, pre-paid, non-refundable tours, accommodation, transport, tuition fees after your trip starts if you are unexpectedly hospitalised or declared medically unfit to continue travelling due to your pregnancy. The symptoms must have occurred after you booked and/or paid for your trip and after you bought the insurance.

Indian residents: Our insurer for Indian travellers, ihi Bupa, has decided that they are no longer able to manage benefits greater than cover for Overseas Medical Expenses and Medical Evacuation/Repatriation.

What’s not covered

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything. Do take the time to read the terms and conditions in the product guide (policy wording). That way there are no surprises if you need to use it.

Here are the main things that aren’t covered related to pregnancy:

  • any expenses caused by pregnancy or related complications (of your pregnancy or of your travelling companion or close relative’s pregnancy) before you leave home/start your trip, including expenses to cancel or rearrange your trip.
  • any medical expenses that occur after the 26th week of pregnancy if you are expecting one child;
  • any medical expenses that occur after the 18th week when the pregnancy is the result of any assisted reproductive program (e.g. IVF) and/or it is a multiple pregnancy (more than one baby);
  • routine pregnancy check-ups e.g. standard ultrasounds and blood tests;
  • care for a newborn baby, however, if childbirth were to occur while travelling, each case is assessed individually;
  • induced abortion which is not medically prescribed;
  • if you change your mind to travel due to your pregnancy;
  • any expected expenses where you were aware of any complications, have seen a doctor, specialist or hospitalised for complications related to pregnancy before the start of your trip. Also, if you suffer symptoms, are diagnosed or treated for a complicated pregnancy during your trip and you extend your insurance, there is no cover for expenses related to the same pregnancy in any future insurance period. This applies to you, your travelling companion or a close relative.
