If your swimsuit is packed for your sunny vacation to California but suddenly you can’t go, travel insurance could help. You may be able to claim for your non-refundable costs of cancelling your trip (cooling off period applies).

For Brazilian residents, all of World Nomad’s travel insurance plans include cancellation cover if you have an accident or get sick before you leave.

In addition, you may be covered for cancelling your trip if a close relative or your travel buddy is hurt or seriously ill (policy conditions apply).

What else is covered under cancellation travel insurance?

If you’ve bought your travel insurance policy with World Nomads, you may be able to make a claim for your non-refundable cancellation costs. These include (but are not limited to) if:

  • You experience an illness or personal accident that medical experts determine prevent you from traveling.
  • Strikes or delays by the travel providers you had booked with.
  • If your house is severely damaged and you must stay to make urgent arrangements.
  • If the person responsible for looking after your kids while you’re abroad has an accident or gets sick.
  • If your boss has an accident and the company formally asks for your presence at work.
  • A judicial summons.
  • If you get a new job or if you’re fired unfairly from your current job.
  • After purchasing the insurance, you or your spouse is advised by a doctor you must rest because of a high-risk pregnancy.
  • You are placed in quarantine for sanitary reasons.

Note that if you transfer your trip to another person as a result of one of the covered events, the transfer expenses may be covered by this coverage, provided they do not exceed the cancellation expenses.

To support your claim

While we hope none of this happens and you enjoy your trip, if you do need to make a claim you’ll need to provide copies of all relevant documents including;

  • Medical reports and examinations to show you, your relative or friend are unfit to travel
  • Patient records and doctor’s report from the hospital
  • Any police or fire department reports
  • National driver’s license (in the case of motor accident)
  • Documents proving family relationship (if any)
  • Travel company confirmations, itineraries and receipts of refunds received
  • Receipts of all travel payments
  • Any other documentation related to what happened that might help your claim Cover for travel cancellation is limited only to expenses directly imposed by your travel providers up to you policy limit.

What’s not covered?

Travel insurance cancelation cover doesn’t include everything. This means you may not be covered if you cancel your trip due to:

  • Changing your mind!
  • If your visa is refused
  • Vaccination expenses
  • Accidents resulting from anything illegal
  • Medical complications arising from pre-travel surgeries (unless from a covered event)

This is not a full list of what's covered and not covered. There are item limits and conditions that apply, so for more information read your policy carefully before you buy.

Be prepared if you need to claim for cancellation.

Depending on your claim, you'll need copies of:

  • Receipts
  • Itineraries
  • Doctors/death certificates
  • Medical history
  • Written documentation from the travel provider of reason for cancellation and any refunds

Wife's accident cancels Kilimanjaro

I have to cancel my trip to Tanzania because my wife had an accident and she is waiting for a scan of her back. I should fly to Berlin tomorrow, then Bergen and day after to Africa. It is impossible now because she is alone in the house and I have to take her tomorrow to hospital for another scan. I paid 900 pounds for a Kilimanjaro Climb which is not refundable as it is too close to departure. I paid a deposit for a 3 day safari and had to cancel flights and my volunteer job.
